‘The Prayer of the Heart' – An introduction to the ancient method of contemplation known as the Hesychastic Way’

The Hesychastic Way is a tradition practised by the Desert Fathers and is deeply rooted in Biblical tradition. According to these early Christians the effectiveness of this method is not so much contained in the techniques themselves, but rather in the luminous presence and saving of him whose name we invoke.   Well known in the Greek Orthodox Church, and described by St Pope John Paul as ‘the most esteemed of all prayer’, it is a prayer of tranquillity, of silence, and essentially of the heart. Our body is a microcosm of the Universe and according to Origen there is within us ‘a second universe’. In Christianity the body is the instrument of prayer and we see that the link between the body and soul is the heart.

There will be some teaching and times of practice and times of silence.

This opportunity will be of particular interest to those who have attended the ‘Learning to be at Home’ retreat in recent years, but is open to anyone who may feel drawn to this introduction in the lovely setting of Ammerdown. It will be facilitated by an experience educator and spiritual director Sr. Monica Butler RSM.
